Mine Safety Awards

Underground and surface mines participate for this prestigious safety award. Safety Awards are presented yearly to both a surface and an underground mine with the lowest reportable rate of incidents. The number of incidents are taken from MSHA reportable accidents.

2007 Safety Awards

Presented at the Annual Meeting and Convention at the Copper Mountain Resort in Copper Mountain, Colorado June 2007.

Ed Pettigrew of BHP Billiton, Safety Committee Chair, presented the tenth annual Institute Safety Achievement Awards to both surface and underground mines for the safest mines in the eight-member state region. Information gathered from the MSHA data was verified by contacting the mines to confirm accuracy.

Winners were:

• Surface Mine - Western Fuels-CO, LLC - New Horizon Mine
• Underground Mine - Canyon Fuel Company, LLC - Skyline Mine #3
